The season opens on 6 March 2020 with Son-Mother (2019), the story of Leila, a single working mother of two, living in sanctions-gripped Iran. With jobs at stake at the factory, she receives a marriage proposal. But its conditions give her pause for her thought. The screening will be followed by a conversation with the director Mahnaz Mohammadi before being opened up to audience Q&As.

Son-Mother will then give way to an Opening Reception, featuring a unique musical performance by the wonderful Daf O’Dills, an all-ladies Iranian band from Scotland. Other guests include Farideh Koning and Kourosh Ataee (Finding Farideh), Ali Jaberansari (Tehran: City of Love), and Majid Barzegar (Leakage). Details of all films, including an exclusive programme of shorts curated by producer, director and filmmaker Majid Barzegar, are available at the festival website, www.ediranfest.co.uk

As in previous years, the Festival also comprises a Photography Exhibition, curated in response to the theme of the Film Season. Running from 22 February – 14 March 2020 at Filmhouse Café Bar, it showcases diverse work by Iranian photographers who have masterfully captured different forms of movement in various locations in Iran. It is curated by the acclaimed Iranian photographer and former photojournalist, Laleh Sherkat, renowned for her work during the Iran-Iraq war and documenting the life of female prisoners in Iran. Entry to the Exhibition is free.
